Questions about the Royal Wedding

Some things Amy & I came up with this morning while watching the "after" wedding hoopla while we ate breakfast....
(we saw the part when everyone in London was waiting for them to come onto the balcony)

Just when did those folks who stood right at the fence get there?

Did Princess Kate's arm get tired with all the waving?

Did she go to waving school?

Is canary yellow really the right color for the Queen? (I personally think she looks better in blue)

At any point in this whole engagement did Kate ever look at William and say
"you better treat me better than your Dad treated your Mom"?

How many people in the crowd thought the couple was waving at them?  Probably most!

How many folks were on FB and/or tweeting about where they were?

I'm sure it was a lovely ceremony.  Her dress was gorgeous.  All the fru-fru on Princes Charles, William & Harry was not "understated", actually it was kind of glaring & seemed to overshadow the bride.  As usual, the little girls from the wedding party were adorable ~ especially the pouty, curly headed little beauty on the balcony who seemed to be bored with the whole thing.  Amy thinks she was ready for wedding cake.

This young couple now faces the daunting task of being married and being in the limelight.
Everything will be scrutinized to the most minute detail.
"Experts" will be analyzing everything about their lives & wanting to give advice.  And some of the experts won't have a clue what they are talking about cause they've never been married.
My prayer for this couple is that the Lord will knit their hearts together in love and service to him.
That the world will leave them alone and let them be newlyweds.
That the demands of their "public lives" will not overshadow their marriage.
That they keep in perspective "its not about the wedding ~ its about the marriage"

My perspective on this event is different than most ~ colored by the fact I've been riding in a car for 1000 miles for 2 days.  Also, it just seems to be so super extravagant given the horrible devastation wrought by the tornado's in the South this week.

Crocheted Coaster

This is my first attempt to crochet with string instead of yarn.  Amy and I think it turned out pretty well.  I really started out making a round coaster but after 3 rounds it still looked like a lumpy "something".  So, I pulled it out and started just like I do for a dishcloth.  Chained 18 and then started the 1/2 double crochets rows till it was square, then I single crochet around all the sides of the square and then I did double crochets around all of that.  I really like the lacy effect the double crochets give to the edges.

I use the double crochet stitch rarely and had to re-read the directions to accomplish the stitch.

Now, after I make 5 more I will have a set to enter in the fair.  (The pictures above are before it is blocked)

Amy is ready to try and wants to go buy some crochet string and a small hook at Walmart later.

Sets of these coasters would make a wonderful addition to the girls hopechests!

(I was inspired to learn to crochet with string after seeing Kathleen's creations over at
 Miss Abigail's Hope Chest .
She has done some beautiful kitchen towels with crocheted edges to use as wedding gifts.  I commented on her blog and requested she publish a set of instructions for "dummies" that even I could follow...she did that today.  Thanks Kathleen!)

Busy Times

We are traveling now.  Tuesday night we stayed in Fort Payne, Ala.  the only really interesting thing that happened on that leg of the journey was a phone call from my friend Rosana.  I am doing a small sewing class for some girls and moms in our homeschool group and we are doing a skirt.  When she called, she asked if I could teach her how to put a maternity panel in her skirt...excuse me...what did you say!!!!  Yep, in Nov. my little baby twin friends are going to be big sisters.  More smocking, whoo hoo!  She did ask to make sure I could smock for a boy ~ I've never done it but am willing to try!  We'll see if the Lord sends a boy or girl.

Wed. we got to Smith Mtn. Lake where my in-laws live.  On the way, Greg took a well appreciated detour into Pigeon Forge, TN so we could eat lunch at 5 Guys Burgers and Fries.  Yummy!  We got to the lake about 6 or so.  Ate dinner and then Greg's sister and her family got here.

I started crocheting on my baby afghan for a Fair entry.  I really like this soft yarn and this will be the largest thing I've ever done.  In my non-crochet time today, we spread a truck load of mulch on the side of a mtn. ~ not too much of an exageration!  My hauling mulch changed to scooping mulch into wheelbarrows after I fell and landed hard on my back side.  Not fun and painful.  We will all be sore in the morning...just in time for the next load to be delivered. Oh goody (sarcasm intended).  I will admit, it looks really good but thats hard work.

Amy is trying to teach cousin Samantha how to crochet.  I don't know how far the lessons have gotten but they're enthusiastic about it.  Katie is working on a gift, so her crochet needle is smoking too!

I think we are going to try to hit the Goodwill Store in the morning.  Amy & Katie want to look at skirts and dresses.  Hopefully, the plans will work out.

Tonight I got a stressful phone call ~ Rosana called to tell me Marie had been taken to ambulance to the ER.  They don't know what is going on and the dr.s are running lots of tests.  So lots of prayers are going up for my best buddy and I pray the Lord will give the doctors and nurses the knowledge to best treat her.  Love you Rie!  Its really distressing me that I am 100's of miles away.  So I will just pray lots and lots!

Simplify

According to my Websters 1828 Dictionary...simplify means ~ to make simple; to reduce what is complex to greater simplicity; to make plain or easy.

That sounds great.  In today's world we are too busy, we make things to hard on ourselves, we expect too much from others and then are disappointed when they don't respond the way "we" think they should, we have taken our eyes off what is important and are focusing on what is not.

We are simplifying alot in our lives.  One of the main areas we will be focusing on is our December celebrations.  I am so guilty of making this month difficult.  While I do like everything associated with the holidays, I take my focus off the real meaning of the season and its turned into a huge commercialized day complete with a gluttony of gifts (which have been bought and hidden away throughout the year).  The last couple of years, I have wondered how to stop the craziness and enjoy the time with my family.  We are coming up with some plans ~ totally unlike me, totally different, totally prayed about, totally discussed between the 5 of us in this house, totally "uncommercial", and I totally don't have all the details worked out.

Here is what we know...We will be putting out some simple decorations ~ this will involve us going through the boxes of decorations that I have collected over the years and lots of decisions.  Several years ago, Greg framed my hand beaded Nativity ornaments in a shadow box which we place on our mantle.  We will probably frame more of our very favorites and place on the mantle also.  We've got several Nativity sets that will be used.  Beyond that, its iffy & doubtful.

Gift giving is going to be different also.  We are going to gift throughout the year (random acts of surprise gifts) and will bless our children (+ others) at Thanksgiving.   This'll be different for all of us.  However A, K, and W are excited about going with us to the big Belks sale we hit every year and picking out their own goodies.  So instead of buying, putting it away, and giving it all on Dec. 25, its going to be a year round tradition.

We do know the focus on Dec. 25 is going to be on family time, togetherness, games, good food, and relaxing.  We are trying to eliminate the "Donna stresses out every year over what time the boys will be here, are the girlfriends coming too, when will we eat, will there be enough is someone changes their mind and decides to come, do we have gifts for them, etc."

We haven't figured it all out.  We have read many passages of the Bible which clearly states not to worship and adopt the practices of others. So we are questioning "why we do what we do, is this right or wrong, do we feel like having some of these things are idols to us, where did all the traditions come from, is the Lord glorified in all of this, do we keep doing these things out of habit, can we pull the plug and jump off this merry go round."  These are questions, we will be seeking out the answers to mainly through lots of prayer, scriptures, & family discussions.

These are things the Lord has laid on our hearts.  They are not reflections on how we were raised, how we have raised our children till now, how church & society functions as a whole.  Its us.  Like I said earlier, we are still figuring this out.

Prayerfully, Donna

Proverbs lesson ~ work hard

Proverbs 16:26

He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.

Why do you work a job or business? Because you enjoy it? Because others expect you to? Because you want to help some enterprise succeed? You work because you have to!

A life sentence of hard labor was Adam’s curse for listening to his wife rather than God (Gen 3:17-19). Instead of leisurely dressing a garden and enjoying a great variety of easy food, men must scratch in the ground to survive. But whether a man knows about Eden or not, there is a powerful necessity that drives him to hard labor: he must work or starve.

Solomon’s observation teaches wisdom, if you will muse upon it. Men work hard by a selfish necessity – for themselves. If they do not work, they will starve. This is man’s condition in the world, whether he wears a white or blue collar: he must labor to eat. If he does not work, he will not eat; the fear of hunger forces him to work every day (Eccl 6:7).

A perverse society resents this wonderful motive for labor. Children are given everything, for doing nothing. They say, “Let him be a child; there will be plenty of time for work later,” meaning he should play all day. They legislate welfare, which mysteriously multiplies those needing handouts. Others provide meals for men too lazy to work. A government could quickly reduce welfare, increase national productivity, and raise tax revenues by simply punishing any harboring or feeding of slothful persons!

Here is the cure for sluggards – no work, no food! Solomon knew laziness was a common problem in young men (6:6-11; 10:26; 12:27; 13:4; 15:19; 19:24; 21:25; 22:13; 24:30-34; 26:13-15). It is difficult to teach or force foolish young men to work hard. But just a few days without food will produce a laborer! Which even Paul endorsed (II Thess 3:8-12)!

Here is the profit motive in Scripture! Communism hallucinates, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” And it fails every time! A man will never apply himself diligently for an idiotic theory that gives the lazy as much as the diligent, but he will apply himself for a proportionate reward! Let him see the endless possibilities in a free market system, and he will gladly do his job well and look for extra work!

The wisdom here can be enhanced or leveraged! Give a man a loving wife and dependent children, and he will work even harder. Two are better than one, because they have an even greater reward for their labor, among other benefits (Eccl 4:9-12). How does a boy become a man? Right training; no allowance; early job; early marriage; and early baby!

Parent, are you using this proverb with your children? Eating is not a right, except for helpless infants. Even young children can do chores, and they should be required to do them before eating. Most parents have an open-refrigerator policy, which fosters laziness and self-indulgence that leads to an undisciplined life. When most grew up on farms, this proverb was generally practiced, for everyone had to help with the chores in order to eat.

Christianity teaches a great work ethic! Shame on Christians who are slothful at work! Whatever you find to do, do it with your might (Eccl 9:10; Col 3:23). Diligent labor at your own business is part of sanctification for a believer (I Thess 4:11-12). And those disliking hard work are to be starved into enjoying it (20:4; II Thess 3:8-12), or they are to be excluded from the churches of Jesus Christ (II Thess 3:6,14).

But this proverb also rebukes greed and covetousness. The ambitious man, obsessed with the reward of hard work, forgets he will die and leave his wealth to another (Eccl 2:17-24; Luke 12:16-21). He heaps up riches, not knowing who will spend them (Ps 39:6). Therefore, wisdom and true success are learning godly contentment with the essentials, not seeking wealth (12:9; I Tim 6:6-10). Convenient food is the wise choice (30:7-9).

Pastor, do you labor diligently in your holy calling? The Lord Christ chose you to endure hardness as a good soldier (II Tim 2:3-4). Paul worked night and day to be the greatest apostle (I Cor 15:10; I Thess 2:9). Does your soul crave laboring in order to hear your Captain say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”? Let Paul’s inspired example and instruction invigorate your soul for Christ’s kingdom (I Cor 9:16; I Tim 4:13-16).

Reader, does your soul crave God and His word? It never will without God’s sovereign grace. Have you checked your hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matt 5:6)? Does it drive you to separate yourself from the foolish, worldly pursuits to learn wisdom (18:1)? You must stimulate your appetite for the sincere milk of the word (I Pet 2:1-3).

Jesus met a great crowd, five thousand men plus women and children, who wanted to make him king, so He could fill their bellies with free bread and fish (John 6:15,26). He told them to labor rather for the food that endures unto eternal life (John 6:27). Are you laboring for yourself in this crucial matter, reader? This is labor with a fantastic reward!

How much does your soul crave the kingdom of heaven? Jesus described it as a man finding a treasure in a field and joyfully selling all that he had in order to buy the field for its treasure (Matt 13:44). You should pray, “Lord, increase the craving of my soul for Thee and the things of Thy kingdom, and direct my labor fervently toward them. Amen.”

Another awesome Proverbs lesson!  Thanks for the forwarded email Bryant!!!!!

Friday

Happy Friday!  Its been a long busy week here.  This week was our cook dinner at church week.  Everyone wanted breakfast for dinner so thats what we did.  Scrambled eggs, ham slices (much cheaper than bacon), grits, biscuits, sausage gravy, cantaloupe and apple sauce.  To say that everyone loved it would truly be an understatement.  For the kids, we cooked green eggs & ham!  That nasty green colored egg was appealing to the littles and one little boy ate 3 platefuls.  We didn't have a camera with us so you'll just have to take my word on the green.  I did taste them cause I wanted to know if the food coloring changed the taste of the eggs ~ no!  At Sam's you can buy Pillsbury biscuits already baked in the bakery section...for the same price as the frozen unbaked.  And they were good!  We will repeat this dinner breakfast again.

We've been listening to our "Drive by Church History" by Todd Friel.  Its really interesting.  They go alot into the "whys & hows" behind the Roman Catholic Church and how they got all their power (hint...they gave it to themselves and now everyone just accepts it).  Yesterday we heard about Charlemagne (spelling could be wrong) ~ when he conquered a country or new land, he required everyone to convert to Christianity or be put to death.  Thats not quite the message we hear in churchs today!

Tuesday was Amy's birthday.  Our baby is now 15 ~ time flies!  We went to Miss. College in the morning for a museum tour & to do pottery at the art college.  Mr. Jolly was our guide/teacher and he was fantastic.  He did a great job with our age group variety, 4-18, kept everyone interested, and informed.  The kids all got to make tiles & after they are fired we will bring them home to paint.  There was extra clay, so a couple of us Moms got in on the fun too.  It was grown up play doh!  Then we all went to Chick Fil A for a birthday lunch ~ yummy!
Dance was after that and then presents and Chicken & dumplings for dinner.  Miss Cake Decorator wanted to make her own cake & requested Oreo ice cream to go with it.  Devils Food Cake with Chocolate icing and oreo ice cream ~ a chocoholic for sure!  Our animal lover is getting a bunny.  So the backyard menagerie is growing.  We will find a furry creature after we get back from our travels.

We've got the sewing machines humming with making some new skirts for the summertime.  I made Amy a jumper yesterday that turned out really cute.  I've also got 5 dresses waiting to be pleated and blocked for smocking, so that will be today's project.  I've got a quilt ready to put on my quilt rack Greg got me, so after travels I can start hand quilting on it.  I love getting projects completed cause there are so many more to do after that!

There is a bad storm headed this way that could produce tornado's!  Oh joy!  So we could be huddled in our bathroom during sirens at times today.  I figure the spring tornado's could die down just in time for hurricane season to start ~ sometimes its hard to be optimistic!  But my trees, plants, bushes, peas and green beans will enjoy the extra rain.  (The rain just started)

We are in the last month of school!  Yippee!  I think there are only 27 or so math lessons to go.  History to finish up.  Spanish on the computer.  Lots of reading.  We are looking forward to the GHEA conference in GA.  Ken Ham & Voddie Bauchum will both be speaking, also Kevin Swanson.  Its gonna be a fun, inspirational weekend.  I can get my homeschool mom batteries recharged and be prepared for next year!!!!!  I've got 3 years left and really want to make the most of them.  That topic will be another post for another day!

Hopefully tomorrow will be dry and we can finish our new deck.  James has started painting our porch (after Allen primed it) and we are counting on more painting to happen tomorrow.

We are praying for the family of a Marine Sargent that was killed at the end of last week.  This is a local man from our community.  From what I understand from a Marine ~ he went into the field to retrieve his buddy who had been injured by a landmine.  While bringing the buddy to safety another landmine exploded and killed him.  His body reached here yesterday and the funeral is tomorrow.  Praying for comfort, peace, and quiet during the church service, processional & graveside ceremony. I do know that the Marines have requested as many Military as they can get to line the route from the church to the cemetary, so that proper respect will be shown to this brave hero.  (That crazy "church" group is coming to protest.  Those folks really need a touch from the Lord ~ he could either touch & turn their hearts or just whack them upside the head.  Their Sunday Sermons must be really "interesting"  to cause such reactions.)

The Proposal

Its not often the guys parents and the girls parents get to witness & record "the marriage proposal", but we had that opportunity on Sunday.

Congratulations Rob & Sarah.

We are praying the Lord will bless you both with a Christian home and many wonderful years together.  Thanks for sharing your special moment with so many witnesses!

Missions Saturday

Saturday dawned bright and early.  OK, 7:30 may not be that early for everyone but
for my Saturday it was!
We met at the church parking lot, loaded up in cars and van and took off for Tinsley!
The Pastor was there to greet us.  We saw the list of jobs.  Had a devotional
and got to work.

The girls went out with teams visiting in the community to invite
everyone to a church cookout/open house for that afternoon.

Greg, Will, James, and I started out with the team replacing siding on the
side of the fellowship hall.  The men ripped off the old siding, and measured for the
new boards.  Will & I hauled the siding boards to the saw and hammered nails in
when needed.

Lunchtime was sandwiches, chips, and just about any cookie type you could
think of.  It looked like a Keebler Elf explosion in the fellowship hall.
Lots of gatorade, water, tea, and soft drinks were indulged in.

Then the painting started.  Morgan, Amy, Katie and I started the process
then we were joined by Tyler, Rhett, & Collin.  We got the side of the
fellowship hall completely painted and then 2 sides of another building.
As you will be able to see from the pictures below, it wasn't all hard work!

The Lord blessed our efforts and every job on the Pastor's List was completed.

Lots of folks showed up for the cookout dinner.  Church members and
folks from the community.  The burgers and hot dogs were cooked to
perfection on the grill ~ thanks to Greg & Scott H.

It was a wonderful day.

Amy decided it was too hot to play ball.  I agree!

This crowd is hot, tired and hungry!
Dinner is on the way!

John 3: 14-21

"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.  And this is the condemnation that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deed were evil.  For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.  But he who does the truth comes into the light, that he deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been "done by God.""

Happy Fri-turday!

Happy Fri-turday everyone!  I hope you are having a wonderful day.  What?  You don't know what Fri-turday is?  Thats easy, its a Saturday on a Friday!  Greg took off work, we slept late, went out to eat breakfast, ran errands, came back home for a little bit, picked up the kids and ran more errands.

We've got framing boards to start our new deck.  I got a floor quilting stand for hand quilting a bigger quilt (decided yesterday I like hand quilting ALOT better than machine quilting) with a 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby.  Amy got some fabric to finish her log cabin quilt.  I sent in an order to Vision Forum during their huge Spring Sale...........if anyone wants to order anything please go through my affiliate link at the top of the blog.  Their sale ends tomorrow night.  There are lots of CD's that are only $2-$3 and sets that are $15 or so.  Got some goodies for our homeschooling next year!

Tomorrow, we are going with a group from our church to Tinsley, MS to help out a small church up there.  Some replacement of siding, replacing carpet and bringing their pews back in, visiting in the community, and then a cook out up there tomorrow night.    Ought to be a full fun day together serving this church and the Lord.
Last night was our Associational Youth Bible Drill.  All of our kids did great and are advancing to the State Drill next week!  This was Amy & Will's 2nd year and they were much more comfortable this year.  They've worked really hard and it showed last night.

Sunday, our church is doing 2 revival services.  We are excited to see how the Lord will move in the services and are praying for many souls to be brought to him.

Hope your Fri-turday night is a good one!

Enjoy your weekend!!!!!!!
